General Administrative Duties
Administrative Assistants are responsible for managing projects, opening and distributing mail, organizing files, and conducting general research. You may also be in charge of other basic administrative duties, such as ordering office supplies and communicating with vendors.
General administration duties require people in this position to possess excellent typing skills, strong oral and written skills, and the ability to communicate well with others. You must be able to work independently or on a team with other professionals.
Knowledge of computers, software, databases, and word processing programs is necessary. Assistants must also be able to operate general office equipment, such as a copy machine, fax machine, multi-line telephone system, and scanner.
Executive Assistants carry advanced skills and a progressive history of advancement with the ability to manage complex projects, organize travel and events, assemble presentations, make purchasing decisions, prepare expense reports, manage multiple schedules, interface effectively with leadership and executive teams, and act as a first line of contact to C-level stakeholders, both internal and external.
Administrative Assistants typically carry a regular Monday through Friday schedule whereas Executive Assistants may be expected to have greater availability including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Though no formal college degree is required, a combination of real world and on-the-job training will prepare most candidates for success in these roles.
