Position Summary

The General Designer in the Downtown Network Engineering section will be assigned technical duties in either planning or designing manhole, duct bank, vault, cable, electrical service installation/removals, transformer equipment installation or removals, GIS, mapping, SCADA Monitoring and Control Projects and other duties for the Downtown Network System. The nature of the Network General Designer’s position requires an individual who is inquisitive, self-motivated and works well with other employees.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Utilizes established procedures and processes to perform assigned tasks under direct supervision.
  • Assists with gathering information for both internal and external customers.
  • Reviews customer plans and technical documents for planning electrical services.
  • Performs field surveys with UIO of customer sites, electrical manholes, electrical vaults, network substation manholes and other locations.
  • Coordinate and perform load surveys utilizing the latest AMI data, SAP data, current ammeters, visual inspections and determining equipment conditions utilizing a thermography camera.
  • Develop quality plans for electrical services.
  • Coordinate new service designs with customer engineering firms.
  • Coordinate and lead Utility coordination meetings with COSA ROW, SAWS, VIA, UIO and other external and internal departments.
  • Planning designs utilizing ARM
  • Developing and creating CADD designs utilizing Bentley CADD software.
  • Customer Engineering – Customer engineering work includes but is not limited to the coordination and design of all new customer service installations with the Customer Engineering department general designers, coordinators and Architect/Engineering Consultants for new transformer vaults, extensions, re-models, grid services, street-light design, traffic signal services, providing job estimates and other assigned customer engineering work.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Ability to work in a variety of locations such as the field, construction centers and the main office
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling

Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with customers and support teams.
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills for interaction with all levels of personnel
Effective interpersonal and customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications

Proficient in ARM
Experience with Computer Aided-Drafting systems and Bentley Microstation
Familiarity with ESRI GIS and Arc FM Designer
Experience in SAP and ARM
Technical writing experience

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chem, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work
