The Sales Tax Accountant as part of the Sales and Use Tax Group (Indirect Tax Team) will be completing compliance responsibilities for BD including completing return filings, ensuring compliance within established administrative policies, state regulations and acceptable accounting practices.

This position is responsible for monthly transaction tax compliance responsibilities for the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. This position assists with sales/use/B&O compliance, business license compliance, preparing journal entries, assisting with customer exemption certificate management, assisting with transaction tax audits, reconciling tax related accounts for month end closing procedures, performing the monthly use tax review, maintaining excellent internal/external customer service, assisting with tax software maintenance, and other ad hoc continuous improvement projects as assigned.

The Sales Tax Accountant responsibilities

  • Prepare and support transaction tax refund claims through completion

  • Complete business licenses timely and track on tax calendar

  • Maintain customer exemption certificates for all US and Canada legal entities

  • Reconcile tax accounts in Blackline

  • Prepare and submit return filings for gross receipts and sales and use tax

  • Research tax laws for accurate compliance, use tax accrual review, and monthly reporting

  • Review purchases and prepare journal entries to ensure compliance is accurate

  • Maintain tax automation software to ensure compliance accuracy

  • Ensure compliance within established administrative policies, state regulations and acceptable accounting practices

  • Provide excellent customer service via communication with internal and external customers. (Respond to GMB emails within 48 hours)

  • Identify and implement process improvements in the Indirect Tax department

  • Assist with sales tax audit requests and appeals, working with business units, customers, third party consultants and state auditors

  • Perform tax research and document tax positions

  • Assist with various projects as assigned including but not limited to sales and use tax testing

Qualification and Requirements

  • Min Bachelors’ degree in Accounting and/or Finance or related field

  • 2 to 5 years of experience with sales/use tax compliance at a global company and/or complex multi-entity reporting responsibilities

  • 2 to 5 years of experience preparing returns working with complex datasets including SAP, Sabrix, and/or Vertex data. JD Edwards experience is a plus

  • Knowledge of SOX controls & compliance and an understanding of GAAP Accounting

  • Business Intelligence/Business Warehouse expertise a plus

  • Strong digital literacy: Excel manipulation, ERP (SAP/JDE) Tax Software (Sabrix/Vertex)

  • Ability to utilize critical thinking/analytical skills to solve complex tax issues

  • Experience researching tax laws and regulations using tax research engines

  • Experience with reconciling G/L accounts

  • Lean Six Sigma Certified preferred

  • Successful history of prioritizing and driving for results

Work Environment / Travel

  • Work in an office setting onsite at BD San Antonio (with potential for hybrid role between home and office based) (There is no relocation/travel coverage available)
