Who We Are:

A manufacturing team of engineers and technicians providing inventory storage and control and the fabrication of Space Flight Hardware.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Program and understand Material Science related to solder joints in a complex R&D environment related to Space Science
  • Serve as technical leader in manufacturing engineering and printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication of the Avionics Production Section of the Southwest Research Institute Space Science and Engineering Division.
  • Oversee fabrication of printed circuit boards in a low-volume, high mix R&D environment to meet wide-ranging requirements from quick turn prototypes to space-flight certified electronics.
  • Manufacture sophisticated one-of-a kind systems that contribute to the exploration and research of space, advance scientific knowledge and safeguard our nation's security.
  • Provide ongoing process improvements, root cause analysis, and corrective/prevention actions in an R&D engineering role.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Oversee engineering aspects of Space Flight hardware PCB assembly and soldering of both Surface Mount and through hole electronics to IPC-A-610 Class 3 and IPC-J-Std-001 w/Flight Addendum standards.
  • Responsible for the qualification, operation, preventative maintenance, trouble shooting and repair of area equipment to include solder jet pasting, pick and place, vapor phase reflow, selective soldering, component storage and optical monitoring equipment.
  • Provide technical training in soldering and manufacturing techniques, methods and processes to fabrication technicians.
  • Support Controlled Stores operations providing safe and effective storage for and control of Program and Division components and inventory.


  • Requires a Bachelors with a 3.00 GPA in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Knowedge and training in mass solder reflow equipment techniques and processes
  • 10+ years: Engineering experience related to new Process devevlopment, process characterization, process temperatur monitoring and control techniques.
  • Experinece programming metrology systems
  • Exeperience with data analysis
  • PCB assembly and fabrication
  • Knowledge of electronic components, soldering and solder reflow principles and requirements, ESD control and mitigation
  • Experience and use of Designed Experiments, Six Sigma, Continuous Improvement and DFx.
  • Experience with inventory control systems.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required

Special Requirements:

Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident due to ITAR work in section.
